Let's start this off by getting one thing out of the way early: the David Gilmour Signature Series Strat from the Fender Custom Shop is a gorgeous guitar. This guitar was designed by the Fender Custom Shop working directly with the legendary Pink Floyd guitarist, as well as his longtime guitar tech, Phil Taylor.
The original guitar, Gilmour's "Black Strat" was used extensively on classic Floyd albums The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals and The Wall. While you'll likely never have the opportunity to get your hands on David's original guitar, from a spec standpoint, this is as close as you can get.
The David Gilmour Signature Series Strat features an alder body and is available in NOS (New Old Stock) Black or Relic Black Over 3-Tone Sunburst. This model has a nitrocellulose finish, one-piece maple C-shaped neck and 21 vintage frets, as well as vintage hardware and tuners, giving it plenty of vintage vibe. The bridge is a Vintage Stratocaster bridge, with a Custom shortened vintage trem arm. Moving to the pickups, the pickup configuration includes a Custom Hand-Wound Fat '50s Strat in the neck position, Custom Wound Strat in the middle position and a Seymour Duncan SSL-5 in the bridge position.
Finally, this stunner ships with a custom Fender guitar case and comes with some cool case candy (not the kind that rots your teeth). You'll get a high-end Evidence guitar cable and David's three-disc Live in Gdansk CD/DVD.
Now that that's all out of the way, let's take a look, and listen, courtesy of Brian Baggett from Musician's Friend Private Reserve Guitars.
Played right out of the box with the factory strings, this guitar (Serial #R87118) went through the following the signal chain: Strat → Mogami Cable → TC Electronic Polytune 3 Pedal Tuner → Xotic Effects BB Preamp Overdrive → JHS Pedals Angry Charlie V3 Overdrive → Boss DD-7 Digital Delay → Fender Vintage Reissue '65 Deluxe Reverb.
