In a Twitter feed, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez has announced a new project that brings together his sidekick in The Mars Volta, Cedric Bixler-Zavala, with Red Hot Chili Peppers bass player Flea. The new combine will be known as Antemasque.
Along with the announcement, Antemasque posted a rehearsal video on ESPN’s X-Games website. In the clip, Flea shows off his ‘61 Fender Jazz Bass that was custom-embellished by a fan using real butterflies.
The band has also posted the track “Hangin In The Lurch” and has generated a firestorm of conversation and speculation on its Facebook page.
There’s some question though about Flea’s future involvement. In a tweet on April 9, the bassman wrote, “Woke to find out I’m in a new supergroup. Hahahaha. Played on some tracks a few weeks ago with my friends omar and Cedric for love that['s] all.”
Mars Volta officially became an ex-band last year when Bixler-Zavala announced he was no longer a member. He together with Rodriguez-Lopez formed Mars Volta back in 2001.
Stay tuned as this story develops—or doesn’t—as the case may be.
