Just when you thought the beef between lookalikes Will Ferrell and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith had been settled with the recent drum-off on The Tonight Show, the feud has spilled over to include Metallica beatkeeper Lars Ulrich.
Though we thought the outcome of the May 22nd drum-off was decisive, with Ferrell crushing Smith in a fourth-round comeback involving an oversized cowbell, it turns out that Smith’s still fuming. He recently told Rolling Stone that the rivalry “will go on until the end of time.”
Thickening the plot even further, Ferrell has drawn the Metallica drummer into the fray, telling Spin, “Lars gets pissed because he gets mistaken for both me and Chad Smith. He can settle that score now, too.” To which Smith added, “There it is. The gauntlet is down.” setting up a another grudge match—this time with three drummers going at it.
In their bi-coastal phone conversation with Spin, Ferrell and Smith trace the origins of their rivalry as well as some dishing about footage of the two chatting on Jimmy Fallon’s couch that got killed for being too risque. The pair also riff on EDM and talk about the recent YouTube buzz generated by a clip of Weezer drummer Patrick Wilson snagging a frisbee in mid-performance without missing a beat. Smith dismisses the feat, saying, “Frisbees? I've seen Will catch ninja stars.”
Here at The HUB we’ll be closely monitoring developments as the battle of the lookalike drummers continues to morph and spread.
